Insurance & Reimbursement

Using your insurance: the superbill process

What is a Superbill?

Choosing Peace is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. However, many clients still use their insurance to help cover part of the cost through their plan's out-of-network benefits.

A superbill is an itemized receipt provided after each session. It includes the date of service, procedure code (CPT), diagnosis code (ICD-10), license and NPI information, and the fee charged. You submit it to your insurance company yourself, and if you have out-of-network benefits, they may reimburse you directly for a portion of the cost.

Before we begin, ask your insurer:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health services?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and has it been met this year?
  • What percentage of the fee is reimbursed once the deductible is met?
  • Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per year?
  • Do I need pre-authorization for outpatient therapy?

How it works

1

Pay at time of service

You pay the full session fee at the time of service, as usual.

2

Receive your superbill

A superbill is provided after each session or on a monthly basis — whichever you prefer.

3

Submit to your insurer

Submit the superbill to your insurance company through their member portal or by mail, following their out-of-network claim process.

4

Receive reimbursement

Your insurer processes the claim and reimburses you directly, according to your plan's out-of-network benefit. This typically takes 2–6 weeks.

A few things to know: Reimbursement amounts and timelines are set entirely by your insurance plan. A superbill requires a mental health diagnosis, since that's what insurance companies require for reimbursement. Just let us know if you'd like to start receiving superbills and how often — we're happy to set that up.
